Super Typhoons rarely come through our parents’ home island of Negros Occidental so no one was prepared when Rai (known locally as Odette) hit land. While my parents survived, up to a total of 410 died, at least 1,261 people injured, 80 still missing (as of 1/8). Hundreds of thousands of people across the nation have been affected. Many left homeless with little to no access to food, medicine, and/or clean water.

The pink dot is where my parents live. Elders in their area claim this is the hardest storm they’ve ever had to live and survive through. The purple area is where our relief efforts have been and will be continued to be carried out.

While most of the damage hit the areas of Siargao Island, Cebu, and Bohol, our home island of Negros was also damaged and is receiving very little aid with most of the help respectfully going to other areas.

We wanted to send money out to an organization that would directly help with our area but with bigger NGOs and non-profit organizations, we weren’t sure where our money was exactly going.

After reaching out to our network, we decided that we could try and get money flowing into projects that could help with the areas that meant most to us - Negros Occidental. With my Manang Katy living in Bacolod (north of areas majorly devastated by Odette), she thankfully offered to help get a clean water relief effort going. She has been working with her local water supplier, Kwench Refilling Station, to get the efforts going. They have been taking donations and putting together water containers and food packs and delivering to areas devastated by the storm. Also helping us with this relief is MENEZ USA (my parents and their distribution company) and our cousin, Inday Rita. I am forever grateful for their help.

Our first and test run was on 12/23. We donated $75 = 21 containers to the Municipality of Ilog. It was that first test run that helped us to realize that this was a possibility for us to be able to help without having to go to the Philippines and do it ourselves. With our family members willing to help, all we needed to do was raise funds and help them to plan and allocate the funds.

While our main focus will be water, we are also starting to send out food packs.

Your $4 donation buys a 4.75 gallon (18L) water container. Your $9 donation buys a water container with food pack (20 cups of rice, 4 cans of sardines, and 4 cans of corned beef). All water and food will be distributed to families that were affected by the storm and need our help in Central Negros Occidental. Transparency is key here.
